coons, snakes and other threats and, finally, 10 inches of cedar chips were laid inside the boxes as bedding. Three of the boxes were erected in a marsh next to a river, and four were placed in a lake.
The project was spear-headed by Wakefield parent Mr. Jeff Perry, in coordination with AP Environmental Science teacher Mrs. Ann Pankow. Mr. Peny taught science for 17 years and holds a degree in Forestry from Virginia Tech. He oversaw a much larger version of this type of project on Maryland’s Eastern shore, producing 250 nesting boxes over the course of 10 years.
The boxes come just in time for nesting season and will be checked next fall to monitor the success of the project. Mr. Peny hopes to add additional boxes on other sites next year.

Chan tel Paul has been accepted at Virginia Commonwealth University, and Catriona Tbth has been accepted at the University of Maine. And in scholarship news, Dan Carrier has been awarded an $8,000 scholarship to Michigan State, and Catriona Tbth has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship to Johnson & Wales University.

Spring Break
The schools will be closed April 6 - April 13. Classes will resume Monday, April 16. The School Board office will be open April 10, 11, and 12.
The Rapp-fitness Center WILL BE OPEN on April 10,11, 12, and 13 and closed April 6 and 9.
April 10: No School Board meeting tonight. School Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 17 due to Spring Break schedule.
April 11: TVack and Field meet switched to Luray
This is a change due to the contractor (Precision Sports Surfaces of Charlottesville) not completing work on the track.
