The TMDL process has three steps: finding the pollution sources and determining the reductions needed, developing a plan to install conservation measures - also called best management practices (BMPs) - to fix the pollution problems, and finally putting the plan into action.
The DCR and DEQ have finished the first step and are working on the second step to develop an implementation plan for BMPs. Such practices include fencing livestock out of streams and planting vegetated buffers next to waterways.
Funding from state and federal agencies is available to landowners who install BMPs that will have a positive effect on water quality in impaired streams. For example, some $3.5 million is available
