The American Cancer Society awarded a small minigrant of about $650 to the Rappahannock Unit to help support the costs of advertising the project and assisting with screenings. The award is part of the American Cancer Society’s Rural Initiative. The event, similar to that done in 2005 will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rappahannock County High School gym on Saturday, April 21.
A number of recognized health care providers will provide screening activities for free:
• Dr. John McCue will be attending as medical officer for the day,
• The Rappahannock Lions will do sight and hearing screening;
• Culpeper Hospital will perform cholesterol and blood sugar screens;
• The Rappahannock Health Department will be doing pediatric health screens and providing those children who arrive early with teddy bears (Teddy Bear Clinic);
• Fauquier Hospital will probably perform breast exams and prescription reviews with a pharmacist (patients will bring all their prescription drugs in a brown bag);
• The University of Virginia Medical Center will do head and neck cancer screening and provide smoking ces
