was going to have to push with my broken leg and cracked ribs; it was my only chance left. I resolved that I was going to ignore the pain and pushed as hard as I could. On my third try, I managed to grab the passenger’s seat cushion and pull my upper torso into the car.
I could now see the cell phone sitting between the seats. I reached it, turned it on, attached the external antenna, and prayed for a signal. I got three bars and after what seemed an eternity, finally got through.
I was extremely lucky. If the car door had been locked, if the cell phone had not gotten out, or if the rescue squad had been ■ delayed, I would not have made it. Interestingly enough, that night, after the rescue, my neighbor, Howie Weingarten, kept waking up with nightmares that I needed rescuing.
Maybe my psychic distress signal worked after all.
