I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the Flint Hill and Chester Gap fire and rescue companies for their quick response to my emergency on Feb. 22.
I had been working alone inside a house I'm building for myself on the farm when the ladder I was on slipped out from under me and 1 fell 6 ft. I broke my leg at the hip and cracked five ribs.
Since no phone had been installed yet at that location, and no one knew I was there, the only way to get help was to crawl out of the house to the car where the cell phone was located. I couldn't sit up and could only move a few inches at a time. It took me 8 hours to get to the car. It was cold, dark and windy and my body temperature had dropped to 95 degrees by the time I finally got the emergency call out.
Were it not for the quick response of our local volunteers, I would not have made it.
