Entries are strong for Saturday’s Old Dominion Hounds Point-to-Point, with trainers bringing out the circuit’s heavy hitters as they ready for the upcoming rich National Steeplechase Association season that begins in the region next week.
Headliners include two-time Virginia Gold Cup winner Miles Ahead, entered in the novice rider flat for a final public workout before he tackles his first NSA engagement, reported to be the April 21 Middleburg Hunt Cup.
Like Miles Ahead from the Kinross Farm of Middleburg,. hurdle stakes star Sur La Tete is also down to prep at Old, Dominion, the two-mile open hurdle serving as a warmup for the $150,000 Royal Chase April 20 at Keeneland. •
Trainer Neil Morris used the same path last year, winning, the point-to-point prep at the Ben Venue .Farm course before going on to take the rich Royal Chase.
Timber horses to watch Saturday include Maryland Hunt Cup prepper Bowmans’ Crossing, entered in the three-mile ladies timber, and Classic runner Straight Gin (2002 Preakness) in the Leeds Don open timber feature.
Rounding out the card are two other races over hurdles, (amateur-novice, maiden,) two others over timber (ladies,' owner-rider) and two on the flat (novice rider, Virginia-bred.). .
Ben Venue Farm is located west of Warrenton in, Rappahannock County.
Old Dominion also hosts a hunter pace Sunday, also at Ben. Venue Farm. Competition begins at 2 p.m., with divisions for fast time, optimum time, junior optimum and hilltoppers. Details are at (540) 364-4573.
