“It depends on where you buy the house, how much vou spend. If you could make $20,000 or $30,000 back on each house, you’d be sitting nice,” she said.

“There are a lot of people out there who need help, and there are a lot of people out there with money who maybe didn’t want to leave it in the stock market or wanted to do something a little different while the market was down,” Colvin said. “It is the perfect time to do this.”

Maybe, but keep your eyes open and wits about you if you are thinking of renting to own, real estate investment manager Fred Austin said.

“These kinds of deals mushroomed in the 80s and 90s, too, when the market tanked,” said Austin, the principal behind Austin Realty Management and Investments (ARMI).

They are mushrooming again, Weichert, Realtors’ Tammy Roop said, because so many people are upside down on their homes, and can’t sell in this market.
