latest state budget cuts. The local share, which spares the school system but affects most other county departments and services, will tdtal approximately $85,000 this year. Broadband services
McCarthy also reported on the three companies which have applied for federal stimulus funds to provide broadband services in Rappahannock. Two of the companies, Virginia Broadband and the smaller Piedmont Broadband, already have customers in the county. The third, Fiber Soft, requested funds to build a high-speed fiber-optic data transmission cable loop which would pass through Rappahannock on its way from Culpeper: west along U.S. 522 to Sperryville, Washington, Front Royal, Winchester and Leesburg. The cable would provide a backup to the company's current line, which follows U.S. 15 fjom Leesburg to Culpeper.
McCarthy said the company's application included plans to provide “drops” in Sperryville and Washington for broadband providers, like PBB and VBB, to tap into - but that the company had no plans to provide service directly to consumers.
