Bennett Eastham said that he and his Rappahannock County High School teammates knew that the kickoff to start the second half of Friday night’s football game at Montcalm (W.Va.) could be the turning point.
“We were only up by six points at the half, and they would have the ball to start the second half,” said Eastham, who plays wide receiver and defensive back for the Panthers. “So it was crucial that our special teams had a big play or our defense made a stop on them.”
The Rappahannock County kicking team, which already had surrendered a touchdown earlier in the game, redeemed itself.
Senior Daniel Clement forced the fumoie on the kickoff and the Panthers converted the miscue en route to a 53-40 victory and spoiled the Montcalm homecoming.
