Shenandoah National Park authorities suspect arson in a second outbreak of the fire that began on Old Rag Moutain last Tuesday, October 24. According to Chief Ranger Larry Hakel. the fire that has burned approximately 300 aerds, to date was brought under control early Tuesday evening only to flare up again around 11 p.m. Although no longer flaming, the fire was still going in a slow smolder as of a week later, Tuesday afternoon, October 31.
The fire was first reported at noon on October 24 by Barbara Day of Woodville and Mary Kay Deluise of Amissville. The two women had hiked up Old Rag and, according to Mrs. Day, were congratulating themselves on finding the mountain tourist free when they noticed smoke. Thinking initially
