Although the lack of precipitation may have made life easier for Rappahannock orchardists, it has caused problems with other agricultural enterprises in the county. In the Flint Hill area, said Owings, the dry weather joined forces with grasshoppers to practically ruin the season’s last crop of hay. He noted that pastures •are down, requiring farmers to begin feeding hay stocks sooner. Owings added that streams have dropped to the point where there’s concern over having sufficient water for livestock.
