Precisely because the proponents promise something they absolutely cannot deliver. Proponents of legalized gambling have promised this in every jurisdiction where the issue has come before the voters. We have only to watch the news on TV or read our papers to see how miserably the promise has been kept. It will not be kept in Virginia. The gambling game attracts easy money criminals like manure attracts flies. Even the proponents recognize and admit this; otherwise why do they go to such lengths to allay our fears over it? And, once in, these gentlemen will not confine themselves to the horse racing game. They never do. We have “strict penalties" in this Commonwealth against a lot of things which go on night and day.
The voter in Rappahannock, in my opinion, should not set such a shabby example for young sons and J daughters by voting “yes" to pari-mutuel betting. Next Tuesday we need to legalize pari-mutuel betting about as much as we need to legalize dope or abortion on demand.
