There has been much of late, both printed and spoken, in the news about the Pari-Mutuel question on the ballot November 7. Both proponents and opponents have argued a sometimes heated battle. The end result has been some confusion and question in the minds of the voter. This confusion is understandable, but time is short and those questions should be answered now.
The issue is basically simple. Horse racing is a business which employs many thousands of people, depends on many suppliers, and caters to the public. It is the largest spectator sport in the United States and has held that distinction for over a quarter of a century.
The horse breeding industry is the ultimate supplier for the racing industry. While Virginia has a good, strong breeding industry, its market for race horses is totally out-of-state. Millions upon millions of dollars travel across Virginia’s borders every year to horsemen and spectators alike.
