Voters statewide go to the soils Tuesday to elect a US senator. Fauquier County voters will also help elect a representative to the House sf Representatives for Virginia's 7th Congressional District and express their wishes on two referenda. In the referendum limelight is the one giving voters the opportunity to ratify the General Assembly’s authorization of regulated horse racing and parimutuel betting in the state. The other question, less publicized, would amend the state constitution to permit localities to forego raising tax assessments on old dwellings and other buildings which have “undergone substantial renovation, rehabilitation or replacement.”

There are two candidates, a Democrat and a Republican, on the ballot for election to the US Senate to succeed ReDublican William L. Scott who is not seeking reelection.
An independent, Thomas L. Gorman, Richmond physician, is seeking write-in votes after failing to gather the required number of signatures by deadline time, June 13, to get on the ballot.
ANDREW PICKENS MILLER, 45, former state Attorney General, is the son of the late Francis Pickens Miller, unsuccessful candidate for governor during the heyday of the Byrd organization.
