hence professional horse racing is called for, it is that professional racing is a cruel, exploitative and destructive sport that only the blindly sentimental would claim is carried on by horse lovers. I am reminded of a quotation of William Buckley which recently appeared in the paper concerning his now broken long-standing relationship with Peter Starr: “I have that special affection (for Peter) I reserve for people who make me a million dollars." In the same way, horse racers must have a “special affection” for their animals.

The ultimate argument, “West Virginia does it; why should they get all our money?” makes me wonder if these people are the ones who say to their children, “Don't think for yourself. Don’t live by your own standards. What’s good enough for Johnny, is good enough for you. Follow the crowd.
