cup firmly packed light brown sugar, '/j stick (% cup) butter, softened, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, and a pinch of salt, stir in l'/i cups hot water, and cook the mixture over moderate heat, stirring, until it is smooth and thickened slightly. Let the sauce cool for 10 minutes and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla. Makes about W* cups.
