Later, around 11 p.m., the Park started receiving reports of flames sighted on Old Rag. When Rangers climbed the peak, they found three or four outbreaks of fire above the original sight. ‘‘We suspect arson," Hakel stated in a phone interview October 31.
The only other possibility—“and we haven’t ruled this out”—is that the new outbreaks were caused by several carelessly tossed cigarettes, said Hakel.
