Washington. In 1%9 he was appointed Under Secretary of the Navy by President Nixon, becoming Secretary in 1972. He was the first Secretary to have served previously in both the Navy and the Marine Corps. In 19~3 he was awarded the Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal.

In 1974. President Nixon appointed him administrator of the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration.

On leaving federal service in 1976, he began to travel around Virginia, appearing in behalf of Republican candidates.

He is a trustee of Washington and Lee University and a former trustee of the Washington Protestant-Episcopal Cathedral.

Warner is the father of three children, Mary, Virginia and John William IV, from a former marriage to Catherine Conover Mellon of Upperville.

In 1976 he married actress Elizabeth Taylor and so became father to four more—Michael Wilding Jr.. Christopher Wilding, Liza Todd and Maria Burton.
