Hake! acknowledged that it was possible to use helicopters or bombers to drop fire retardents but added that this type of attack was expensive and had only limited application. In regard to funding for fire fighting efforts at Shenandoah National Park, Hakel explained this was handled through the Park’s Washington office. Fire fighting is not a budget item for Shenandoah. Instead, bills for combating fires are sent directly to the Washington office and paid from there. Contrary to rumors, said Hakel, the Park is not reimbursed for any percentage of fire fighting costs.
