After four months of a growing season to delight anyone engaged in agriculture, Rappahannock County now finds itself in the grip of drought once again.
According to readings taken at Miss Ruby Jenkins’ weather station in the town of Washington, September brought 1.02 inches of rain in 1978 compared to 3.8 inches last year, October, 1977, saw 4 inches of rain fall in Washington. This year, during October only\ .23 inches have hit the ground.
One of the county’s senior orchardists reported that this is the first time in memory that apple picking crews have worked the entire harvest season without missing a day because of rain, according to VPI Extension Agent Rap Owings.
