To the editor:
A massive and wellfinanced campaign to seduce Virginians into opening the door to pari-mutuel betting on horse racing was launched in this County in recent days. ‘‘We all come out ahead”, we’re told, if we vote “yes”. Do we? Let’s look at the four arguments published in favor of this gambling scheme.
1. New Revenue*. From where? The money bet has to come from the pockets of Virginians who’ve earned it the hard way, or from the pockets of out-of-state residents lured into the Commonwealth to gamble. That is a form of “tourism” we can do without. There is not in this scheme an iota of new production of real goods or socially needed services which we can honorably tax.
We simply rob weak Peters to pay cynical Pauls and put money in the pockets of future mobsters. But Paul’s tax burden will continue to climb; where has it been reduced..by accepting legalized gambling into his community? The politicians who favor legalized gambling are playing their old game: “Take it away from them where they won’t see you doing it".
