The theme of this year's Fourth of July celebrations in Washington is “Space,” and it looks as though the festivities will become the largest county-wide entertainment to be held in several years. Activities will begin at 10 a.m. and will end with the traditional firework display at 9 p.m. And to stress the theme of the 4th, there will be hot-air balloon rides for anyone who wants them. It is hoped that all Rappahannock residents will come and enjoy the day—in fact, how can anyone let such a chance to have fun slip by:
The day-long activities r-tll include the first annual Blue Ridge Antique and Classic Car Show, arts and crafts from throughout the county and northern Virginia, bluegrass music, fire engine rides and many other attractions. Nancy Ryan’s Rappahannock County TShirt will also be revealed for the first time on the 4th, and will be on sale for the whole day. The sales will benefit the Washington Volunteer Fire Department, which is cosponsoring the event with the Washington Business Council. The celebration replaces the fire department carnival this year.
There will also be a White Elephant Sale for the benefit of the Trinity Episcopal Church. A number of valuable items will be on sale, including an old mantel from a Rappahannock home.
The Rappahannock Library will feature its annual used book sale, there will be political speeches in front of the courthouse, and various local farm and food organizations will have displays of animals and crops. A chicken barbecue dinner will take place in the evening, followed by the traditional fireworks at Avon Hall. Many other games, rides, events and displays will round out the day.
