steam locomotives now y available for service. Built in 1937 for the Canadian Pacific by the Montreal Locomotive Works, the locomotive pulled high-speed passenger trains in Canada until 1959. Leased by the Southern Railway in early 1979 to pull many of the company’s numerous mainline excursions, No. 2839 and tender weigh more than 300 tons.
The Sunday excursion will mark No. 2839’s first summer trip into Virginia during 1979. Both locomotive and train are being moved from Greensboro, NC, to Alexandria in preparation for future excursions from Northern Virginia.
