At 6:15 p.m., children 12 and under will have their racing competitions by the lake, which will be managed by William “Yogi” Bear Jr. and his Boy Scout Troop. The winners will receive cash prizes.

Just before the fireworks begin at 9:00 p.m., “Hug-inland” will be pulled out of the sky, providing an endless expanse of space for the display—which will be managed by Hubert Gilkey III from Chester Gap.

There will be free parking in the lot by the new firehouse, east of the village near Rt. 211. To ease congestion, those driving to Washington are urged to use this area rather than to try to park on the streets.

It is suggested that those who plan to spend the evening on the slopes of Avon Hall approach from Gay Street by the Court House at the monument. Family groups and picnic supper groups can find good places to watch the excitement of the evening best from there, or from the road side area. Spectators are asked not to set off any of their own fireworks as there will be plenty in the display, and detonation in the crowd may cause accidents. There will be trash cans provided for the audience’s convenience, so please use them.
