Public Hearing
At the earlier June 21 public hearing, Granville Eastham indicated that the Trustees were considering a two-year term for one of the appointees. Eastham noted that two terms expired this year, two (Jackson and Piedmont Districts) in 1980 while no school board members would be up for appointment in 1981.
He reported that the Trustees had checked with the Attorney General’s office and found it was legal to name a school board member for only two years.
“Which representative will be named for a two-year period?” asked “Yogi” Bear. “We haven’t decided yet,” Johnson answered. “We can make both for four years and then next year appoint one for two years,” he added, opening the meeting to nominations from the audience.
“I’d like to suggest keeping Paul Nichols. He’s proven to be very interested in the children and the schools,” stated Mary Schumaker. Peggy and Wayne Sutphin, also residents of Wakefield District, likewise endorsed Nichols, noting that they’d spoken with the incumbent and found he’d accept reappointment. Elizabeth Streagle, Ester
