“I have been impressed with Charles Eldred’s calm ability to make rational judgements,” Charles Manson said, adding that Eldred was a devoted father and would make an excellent School Board member.
Alice R. Wood proposed that Arthlinda Quaintance be reappointed. Frances Lyne also supported Mrs. Quaintance, stating that the incumbent is an educated, experienced person with strong convictions on education.
She described Mrs. Quaintance as “a now person and a then person (who ) can put it all together. She never failed her responsibilities through her husband’s long illness. I think Rappahannock would lose a great deal if we let her go now,” Mrs. Lyne concluded.
"The teaching profession needs to be represented (on the School Board),” maintained Nancy Reeve. “Mrs. Quaintance has been a teacher. She can see it from that point of view,” she said, noting that none of the other board members had teaching experience.
Pauline Bruce added that Mrs. Quaintance can identify with the classroom and could evaluate requests from teachers “as to whether they’re legitimate or whether they’re not so important.”
Newbill Miller nominated Henry Hudson for the Hampton seat. Going over a list of suggested criteria for the selection of School Board members handed out by the Trustees at the opening of the meeting, Miller noted that Hudson is a tax paying voter.
Moving to the second qualification on the list, he said that Hudson was genuinely interested in public schools “and not just since the opening on the School Board came uo.”
