The Rappahannock School Board at its September 11 meeting approved charging a “nominal fee” for all students using the school bus for transportation to extracurricular activities, including athletic events.
The action was taken in response to gasoline price increases that currently amount to approximately 25 percent as figured by board member Charles Eldred.
In reviewing the field trips asked for by teachers for 1979-80, superintendent William Bloomer said that the number of requested excursions had dropped from the previous year.
He noted that athletic events, contracted for a year in advance with the Virginia High School Athletic League, were also included as field trips. Bloomer added that the athletic schedule would be modified by the League if the energy situation worsens.
Individual schools, he said, pay the bus drivers for all field trips with the school board reimbursing the schools (except for the 7th grade outing to Williamsburg) if funds allow.
He estimated payment to drivers at approximately $20 to $25 for class trips. “Most take less than a tank of gas to come and go,” Bloomer said, bringing total cost per field trip to between $35 and $50.
According to Bloomer, elementary teachers were restricted this year to one field trip per grade level. Second and third grade teachers, he said, asked for none. High school faculty requested 13 trips.
