Chairman beverly Massie interjected that she'd already been contacted by seventh grade teachers in support of the annual class trip to Williamsburg. The teachers, she said, felt that parents and members of the community would be willing to defray cost of the trip, if necessary.
“I don’t think there’s any question but that (the Williamsburg trip) is very educational, very worth while,” Bloomer replied.
Noting that the 1979-80 school budget contained the same funds for gas and oil as the 1978-79 budget, board member Charles Eledred figured that prices had gone up by approximately 25 percent.
He suggested that the school board agree to underwrite the cost of gas for field trips to the amount per gallon that gas cost last year, with the students involved paying the difference.
Bloomer responded that this approach would be unfair to students who went on trips later in the year when the cost of gas could be expected to climb even higher. He maintained that the amount alloted in the budget would probably cover field trip costs since the number of excursions had been reduced.
