“Athletes are the ones who practice day after day and go more consistently,” Bloomer said, describing regular class field trips as “one time affairs.”
Eastham and Eldred questioned the fairness of charging for transportation costs for field trips and not for athletic events.
Asked by Mrs. Massie for his response, Walter Masterson stated that “all students should be treated equally.”
“I agree with that,” Alan Stokes responded.
Reconsidering his position, Eastham described class field trips as “larks” as well as educational opportunities. He indicated that he supported Dr. Bloomer in excluding athletes from the transportation fee.
Mrs. Massie asked tor a motion. Getting no response, she yielded the gavel to vicechairman Masterson and then moved that a nominal fee—not to exceed 50 cents per child— be charged to defray transportation costs for field trips and athletic events.
Mrs. Massie’s motion passed three-to-two with Masterson and Stokes opposed.
