There was a time when joining the Peace Corps was THE thing to do. A decade ago. when it was still fashionable to be dedicated, motivated, committed and involved, thousands of young people signed on, eager to serve in underdeveloped nations where they felt they could work to make the world a better place.
The idealism faded. The activist 60's gave way to the apathetic 70’s and the organization that once was a darling of the media under the leadership of Sargeant Shriver lost its hold on public interest.
Although it doesn’t grab headlines anymore, the Peace Corps is still very much alive. Volunteers are still singing on for service in the backwater countries of the world. The numbers are fewer but the dedication to helping those less fortunate while winning friends for America is the same.
