competent attendants, and educating parents so they have more control over birth,” Sher said. Parents who attend her classes want to be in control and want to share the miracle of birth with each other and with people important to them, she added.
Sher’s commitment to teaching classes on home birth grew out of her own disappointments. With her husband Chuck, a cabinet mak«r at Country Cupboards, she had planned the home birth of their first child. But Marshall was born in a hospital instead. “If I had had more competent help, he would have been born at home. My experience provided the impetus for taking the ACHI course,” she explained.
Sher enrolled in the ACHI program after she and her husband moved to Rappahannock. In addition to completing the home study course with its required final examination, she attended a seminar in Florida in home birth. She also keeps up with reading lists and information printouts provided by ACHI.
“There’s a growing interest here in home birth,” Sher said. “In the year that I’ve been in Rappahannock, I’ve talked to many women who’ve had one, two, even three babies at home.”
