“Our loyalty will be to our issues and the candidates who support them," explained Gravely. “It will not be to parties or to personalities regardless of how they stand on those issues.” Among the innovations being considered by the NAACP is the assignment of a lobbyist to the 1980 session of the General Assembly.
The voter mobilization effort has something of the quality of a youth revolt about it. Those spearheading the drive appear to be the young men and women in their 30’s who served in the trenches during the civil rights struggles of the 60's, and who now want - indeed, are demanding - a piece of the leadership action.
As one spokesman put it, “We are the young turks or the young lions. We will invite our elders to come in and advise us, but the time has come for an infusion of new blood and new energy in the leadership roles.”
While Gravely says the NAACP will be in the vanguard of the effort, it will ultimately be working with other black groups and organizations.
