Linder the revised "Payments in Lieu of Taxes Act,” Rappahannock County has received $20,885 in a check from the federal government this week, according to Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson.
Last year. Rappahannock received $6,803, payment for 9.070 acres of the county within the boundaries of Shenandoah National Park. Under an earlier interpretation of the “In Lieu of Taxes Act.” only that land that went directly from private to federal ownership was eligible for coverage. Under the old interpretation, property purchased by the State of Virginia for transfer to federal ownership was omitted.
Robinson worked suc- crotirf/f W -amend thersme* in the last Congress to include land purchased specifically for transfer to the federal government. “The changes made in this law. which is intended to compensate local governments for certain federally-owned, tax-exempt land within their borders, should mean a larger payment for a number of Virginia counties than had been received previously.”
