She also recommends an English nurse-midwife from the Front Royal area and a licensed lay-midwife from Behtonville.
Until laws were changed in 1975, lay midwifery was legal in Virginia. Under the new law, an individual must first be licensed as a nurse and then go to midwife school in order to legally help with a home birth, according to Sher.
