The new wave in attitudes toward childbirth has reached Piedmont Virginia and Rappahannock County.
Women here are joining others throughout the rest of the country in rejecting the impersonal atmosphere of a traditional hospital delivery.
Those who choose to bear their children in hospitals are fighting for more family involvement. Institutions have responded. Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton, for example, offers a birthing room where husbands can stay with their wives through labor and delivery.
But a significant percentage of new parents are looking for more than a hospital can ever give them. They see the birth of a child as the most important event in the life of a family and feel it is best celebrated at home—not in a hospital where the sick and injured g°For
parents who want their children born at home, Sher Orenic offers help. Certified by the Association for Childbirth at Home, International, she has begun classes in Rappahannock to prepare families for home birth.
“My goal is not to just ‘help’ parents prepare for a safe home birth but to educate them about normal birth so that THEY can accept the responsibility for seeing to it that their birthing is safe and what they want it to be,” explained Sher.
