Public comments will be accepted until Nov. 21 on a US Department of Agriculture proposal to restrict the use of four veterinary biological products.
Under the proposal, tuberculin-PPD bovis—used to test cattle for tuberculosis—and rabies vaccines would be limited to use by or under the direction of a veterinarian. The distribution and sales of brucellosis vaccine and antigen—already limited to use by or under the direction of a veterinarian—would have even stricter controls on distribution.
Veterinarians of the department’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said the restrictions would reduce the misuse of these biologies.
The proposed change is being made at the request of a number of professional groups, including the US Animal Health Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Conference of State and Territorial Epidemiologists.
Comments should be sent to the Deputy Administrator, Veterinary Services, APHIS, USDA, rm. 828-A, Federal Building, Hyattsville, Md., 20782, where they will be available for public inspection during regular business hours.
