In most cases, ho anesthetics are given for home delivery. “Generally, being at home, feeling safe in secure surroundings with the right people around has a psychological, effect (on the* mother-to-be),” Sher said.
A family has to work together to make home birth successful. “Just because you’re having your baby at home doesn’t automatically mean it will be a more pleasant or more beautiful experience,” Sher stressed.
Father’s Role
Fathers play a very important part in birthing at home. “The role of the father in the home birth setting is like no other...He helps maintain a calm environment. He helps the mother with her breathing and maintains eye-to-eye contact during labor. He’s also there to welcome the newborn into a peaceful, quiet and calm environment,” Sher explained.
The desire by parents to have an infant son circumsized should not be viewed as an impediment to homebirth, according to Sher. The procedure can be done at a pediatrician's office, she said, adding that many doctors favored a delay since babies don’t develop a clotting factor in their systems until approximately eight days after birth.
Sher also noted that silver nitrate, an antibiotic ointment required by law to be applied to a new born’s eyes, can be administered at home.
“This is the first time in my life that I’ve been so highly motivated for so long a time,” said Sher, in describing her involvement in ACHI’s home birth classes. “It’s more than something I like to do. It’s something that I think is important. People are trying to change the world—to make it a less violent, more peaceful place to live. They really ought to start with birth,” she concluded.
