Last week parents of preschool youngsters were advised that the Rappahannock Public Schools offered developmental programs to pre-school youngsters, ages two through five, who might be handicapped in any way. This article speaks to the older students, ages six through twenty-one.
Over the past two years opporutnities for young people in Rappahannock County with handicapping conditions have expanded dramatically. Psychological services have increased from two days per month to three days per week. In addition to psychological testing the psychologist is also available for counseling, time permitting. Speech therapy is available and currently over 60 students are learning that they don’t have to go through life with a speech problem.
The educable mentally retarded program has been expanded with classes that are now available for ages five through twenty-one. Students in this program are mainstreamed (placed in regular academic classes) to the fullest extent practical. At the high school a new program has been added this year. EMR (Educable Mentally Retarded) students are homogeneously grouped for Reading, Math, and Social Studies, then mainstreamed for Physical
