the county’s accumulated surplus, the tax rate required to support the preliminary budget works out to $4.60 per $100 of assessed value, a jump of 40 cents from the existing rate of $4.20. £ put the supervisors advertised a tax rate of just $4.50 per $100 for Monday’s public hearing. Therefore, as explained by chairman E. P. Luke, the supervisors have two options. They can either cut the budget by $16,000—the amount of revenue generated by ten cents on the levy—or they can readvertise the rate at $4.60, the amount required to support the proposed budget.
They failed to follow either course on Monday, delaying action until after another budget meeting, this time an executive session on personnel, set for Thursday morning. The supervisors also scheduled a joint meeting with the school board for Thursday.
