Carillon
Recitals
A schedule of carillon recitals at the Luray Singing Tower has been released for the summer period. May 31 through September 15. During this time recitals may be heard Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 8 p.m.
In addition to the regular performances, special recitals will be given on September 16 and on October 30 at 2 p.m.; on Sunday, September 2. at 2 and 8 p.m. and on Labor Day at noon.
The Luray Singing Tower, officially named the Belle Brown Northcott Memorial, contains a 47 bell carillon which is an old world instrument originating 400 years ago. It is played by means of a clavier of oak pedals and levers. The bells are stationery and the clappers are connected to the levers and pedals.
The bells range from 12‘/j pounds to the largest 7,640 pounds with a six-foot diameter. They are made of pure copper and tin and the rigid control of the temperature when the bells are cast plays an important part in the balanced tone and uniform quality.
Charles Chapman is carillonneur at the Singing Tower. He studied at the University of Virginia, at Peabody Conservatory of Music, Johns Hopkins University, and Washington, D.C. Musical Institute, and has performed here and abroad. American and foreign composers have created music for Mr. Chapman.
