never understand what mental retardation means.
It doesn't have to mean life in an institution. It doesn’t automatically translate into helplessness or a public burden that must be supported by welfare.
But without early education and stimulation of the mind, the chances are greater that mentally retarded children will never be able to fend even partially for themselves, according to Coffey.
"The word retarded does come up in our class,” Coffey said, “but we don’t dwell on it.” Her children realize they don’t learn as fast as others. “They know they’re slow and they know what slow means. They ask me sometimes what grade they’re in and I tell them they’re not in any grade, that they’re in the special education room."
Special is the key. It’s where Coffey and all of the * comity's teachers "who work w ith handicapped students put the emphasis. And with this emphasis, Rappahannock’s mentally retarded youngsters have a future with much better odds on growing into adults who can face the world by themselves.
