buildings. The height of the skyscrapers was incredible.
We first drove through “Times Square”, the center of the theater district of the city. There was a tremendous variety of movies and plays. New York definitely offers something for everyone.
Next, we passed the famous Empire State Building with is 6,500 windows and 73 elevators.
One of the places I found charming was Greenwich Village, the home of artists and writers. It is very fashionable but expensive to live there. Greenwich Village is noted for its sidewalk cafes and art exhibitions.
Just past Greenwich village exists a very different atmosphere-Skid Row. The 6,000 homeless in Manhatten generally live in this area. It was a shock for many of us to see people sleeping out on the sidewalk. The guide told us that these street people literally drink themselves to death; most die of malnutrition. However, we did pass by the Booth House, a mission that provides meals for these unfortunates.
We then entered the oriental quarter of the city. The bus stopped at Chinatown where we got out and walked around. We visited a Chinese Temple, which is really a relic of the past. Only a few of the very old Chinese worship there; most of the younger Chinese are Christians.
