“We don’t have any decision,"Luke replied, acknowledging, however, that the supervisors had cut $20,000 for vehicles from the proposed budget and raised the allocation for mileage payments to $24,000. He noted that the tax levy to support the budget without cars must be $4.60 while the advertised rate is only $4.50. Luke added that reimbursement for the deputies was figured at 18.5 cents per mile in the preliminary budget, considerably lower than the 25 cents asked for by the sheriff.
In justifying the decision to drop the appropriation for three cars, Luke claimed it would be more cost effective to buy one car this year and two the following year so all wouldn't wear out at once. Countering Buntin’s objection that buying a single car for all the deputies to share would result in the vehicle being driven into the ground. Luke noted that it may be one car or no cars at all. “1 don't think it’s politically acceptable to add ten cents to the tax rate. 1 don’t think it will fly," Luke said, claiming that he personally was for providing vehicles.
