At the supervisor chairman’s request, sheriff W.A. Buntin has secured prices from a rental agency on used cars that carry new car warranties. With the expected police discount, a Chevrolet Impala will cost the county S3,600. Three at the same price will mean about seven cents on the tax rate.
Then, for maintenance, an arrangement can be worked out with the school board to share the services of transportation superintendent Allie Huff and his assistant John Henry Woodard, two of the county’s best mechanics. Tires and parts can also be purchased on a cooperative basis with the school board at considerable savings.
With the state paying a higher percentage of law enforcement costs this year, now’s the time to buy countyowned cars, now before the state orders us to do so, now before we have another complete turn-over in deputies, now in order to provide the citizens of Rappahannock County with the best possible law enforcement program.
Those who support a first-class sheriff’s department should contact their supervisors before a final decision is made. It’s not too late to put the cars back into the 1980-81 budget.
