It may be politically expedient to cut county-owned cars for the sheriff’s department out of the proposed budget for 1980-81 but the action is not in the best interests of police protection for the citizens of Rappahannock. Neither is it fair to the deputies who must choose between leaving their jobs here or continuing to subsidize law enforcement out of their own pockets.
Rappahannocks proposed budget for the coming fiscal year is already $16,000 short due to an error in advertising the tax rate ten cents per $100 less than required. If the supervisors can’t find a category that can be cut by $16,000, they 11 have to readvertise the 1980-81 tax rate at $4.60 and hold a second public hearing. That’s without a provision for countyowned cars. Adding vehicles for the sheriff’s department will require another ten cents on the levy.
“Politically unacceptable,” said supervisor chairman E.P. Luke at this week’s budget hearing. Apparently, the rest of the board of supervisors agreed since none of the other four members contradicted the chairman or offered even limited support for county cars.
