After hearing that, it was hard to believe that the Dutch bought Manhatten from the Indians for twentyfour dollars worth of trinkets.
Famous Lady
Next on the tour was a ferry ride to see the most famous lady of New York—The Statue of Liberty. Her torch of freedom is the symbol of welcome for people entering America from all over the world. For me, that was the highlight of the tour.
Upon arriving back in Manhatten, we drove along the waterfront and viewed the famous Brooklyn Bride.
We saw many famous buildings such as the World Trade Center, Radio City Music Hall, the Lincoln Center and the Natural History Museum.
We then drove through Harlem, which was the center of Jazz in the 1920’s. Now, however, it was sad to see the many old abandoned buildings.
Only five blocks from the abandoned buildings is 5th Avenue, the center of fashion for the elite of the city. This again illustrates the diversity of New York. We passed by many of the old mansions which are now mostly museums. The guide told us some interesting stories about the old millionaires of the city.
Another highlight of the tour was visiting the Cathederal Church of St. John the Devine. We were amazed at the beautiful stained-glass windows, and the intricate stone designs. It is the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world.
The bus then took us back to the hotel and we all felt we knew the city a little better.
Some decided to take a nap. while others elected to go to Macys, the largest department store in the world. To get there, we all eagerly boarded the largest subway system in the world. The New York subway
