“A regular report card is not appropriate for my kids,” she explained. In its place, a special education committee has come up with a proposal for' a nine-weeks narrative report that will tell parents which IEP goals their child has reached, Coffey said. She added that the proposal must still be brought before the school board for approval.

After a mid-morning snack break, the kids resumed work at . individual lessons while Coffey wrote a spelling test on the blackboard for her more advanced students. Tony and Josh, both behind in motor skill development, practiced on a “dressing board,” Tony with snaps and Josh with lacing and tying bows.

Next the youngsters went outside for morning physical education. With the Special Olympics only a few days away, they concentrated on preparing for the games. Coffey demonstrated the proper stance off the starting blocks and then timed practice runs in the 25 and 50 yard dash, shouting encouragement from the finish line.

In addition, Coffey’s students join regular classes for physical education two or three times a week, meeting the state requirement for mainstreaming during lunch period as well.

Excess energy burned off, it was back to the classroom.
