That same day, three dogs near Midland killed a raccoon that was found to be rabid. The dogs did not have current rabies immunizations and so were destroyed.
Over the July 4th weekend, an opossum killed by a dog near Remington, two skunks from Hume, a cat from Markham and two dogs from Midland were turned in for rabies testing, Einarson reported. All of these tests came back negative,' he added.
Einarson described the incidence of rabies in the Fauquier area as “definitely epizootic,” the technical term for an epidemic among animals. He indicated that
