knew all these kids, anyway,” she said. “It’s a great group and for some of them I think it will make a big difference in their achievement next year.”
McCarthy has other ideas for improving the special education program in Rappahannock. In addition to her theory that the same techniques can help children with many different learning problems, she believes that Rappahannock special education teachers should be in touch with each other.
"I think we need a Special Education department,” she said. “I don’t know what the high school, pre-school and primary special ed teachers are doing.” To encourage a good community attitude toward special education programs, McCarthy believes that an advisory committee, composed of parents, educators and administrators, should be formed.
“There’s a lot of ignorance and false information about special education,” she said. “An advisory committee would let us know what the community wants to do.”
McCarthy’s ideas are still in the planning stage and need official discussion and sanction before any progress is made. But for now, smiling faces and waving hands attest to the success of the small summer school program.
