Their success in the city with apples added to Ted’s inclination towards testing his theories in marketing vegetables. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was about 20 years old,” he admitted.
So this season, he and George started up the tractors and tilled 13 acres at Triplett’s farm on Route 626 near Castleton. They put nine acres in corn and the rest they planted with enough vegetables to stock the product department of an entire grocery chain.
The sprawling garden has 2,000 cabbage plants, 1,000 broccoli plants, 1,200 to 1,500 heads of cauliflower, a couple hundred brussel sprouts and eggplants that the Tripletts are trying to grow for the first time, 150 pounds of onion sets and over 1,200 tomato plants representing every variety Ted could find. They sewed 60 pounds of peas, 200 pounds of limas, 600 pounds of potatoes and 200 pounds of string beans. "And I’ve got to buy more,” he added of the beans.
